Visiting The View from the Shard
The Shard is a 95-story architectural marvel that dominates the London skyline. Designed by legendary architect Renzo Piano, its striking, jagged silhouette was inspired by historical church steeples and the masts of old ships. The name itself comes from an early critic who worried it would look like a “shard of glass” cutting through London’s historic center—a description Piano proudly adopted.
Clad entirely in angled glass, the building operates as a “vertical city.” Inside, it seamlessly combines corporate offices, world-class restaurants, a luxury hotel, private residences, and the highest viewing platforms in the country.
Key Facts and Figures
- Record Height: Standing at 309.6 meters (1,016 feet), it retains its title as the tallest building in the United Kingdom.
- The Glass Facade: Its exterior is wrapped in 11,000 individual glass panels, a surface area vast enough to cover eight football fields.
- Bullet Lifts: The ultra-fast elevators shoot upwards at 7 meters per second, whisking you from the streets to the sky in roughly one minute.
- Endless Sightlines: When the weather behaves, you can enjoy panoramic visibility stretching up to 40 miles (64 km) away.
What to Expect: Indoor & Outdoor Viewing
The ticketing experience gives you access to a multi-level observation area at the pinnacle of the tower, split across two very different environments.
The Indoor Galleries (Levels 68 & 69)
Your journey starts on Level 69, a massive, triple-height viewing floor wrapped entirely in floor-to-ceiling glass. Because this level is fully enclosed and climate-controlled, it offers a comfortable retreat from the British weather. Here, you can use high-tech digital telescopes to zoom in on the streets below, browse the gift shop, or grab a drink at the premium champagne bar.

The Skydeck (Level 72)
For those seeking a bit of a thrill, Level 72 takes you to the highest accessible point of the building (244 meters high). This level is partially open-air, meaning the walls are glass but the roof is open to the sky. You can feel the wind, hear the distant sounds of the city, and look straight up into the exposed, structural glass “shards” that form the building’s iconic, open-topped peak.
